What Do You Actually Need for a Website?

Explaining Domains, Hosting, SSL and the Website Itself

When talking to new clients, one of the most common sources of confusion is around the basic components of getting a website online. Terms like “domain”, “hosting” and “SSL” often get thrown around — but what do they actually mean, and what do you really need?

This post explains the essentials, simply and clearly.

1. Domain Name

What it is:
Your domain name is your website address – for example,
yourcompany.co.uk.

Why it matters:
This is how people find you online. You buy (or “register”) a domain name through a domain registrar, and you pay an annual fee to keep it.

Do you need it?
Yes. Every website needs a domain name. We always recommend that you buy it yourself, in your own name, through a trusted registrar.

2. Website Hosting

What it is:
Hosting is where your website lives. It’s the server (a computer that’s always connected to the internet) that stores your website files and makes them accessible to visitors.

Why it matters:
Without hosting, your website has nowhere to exist online. Hosting affects your website’s speed, reliability and security.

Do you need it?
Yes. You need somewhere to host your website files. We recommend that clients use their own hosting accounts so they retain full control, with access shared to the developer as needed.

3. SSL Certificate

What it is:
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encrypts the connection between your website and its visitors. You’ll recognise it by the padlock symbol in the browser bar and the
https:// in your web address.

Why it matters:
It helps protect sensitive information (like contact form entries), improves trust with visitors, and is now a key ranking factor for search engines like Google.

Do you need it?
In most cases, yes. SSL is now standard practice for all websites, not just e-commerce. Most hosting providers include a free SSL certificate with their plans. Make sure it’s enabled.

Most hosting providers include a free SSL certificate with their plans.

4. The Website Itself

What it is:
This is the actual design, layout and content – the pages, images, code and functionality that users interact with when they visit your domain.

Why it matters:
It’s your brand’s online presence. A well-designed site builds trust, communicates clearly, and works well across different devices.

Do you need it?
Yes, of course – but what type of website you need depends on your business. You might need a simple static site, a WordPress site with a blog, or something more bespoke. We’ll always help you choose the right approach for your goals.

What You Don’t Need (Unless It’s Relevant)

  • Ongoing monthly subscriptions for basic sites – A well-built, static HTML site doesn’t require ongoing software updates or licensing fees.
  • Proprietary platforms – If you can’t move your site easily or edit it without specialist tools, you’re likely too dependent on your provider.
  • Over-complicated CMS setups – Not every business needs a content management system. If your site is mostly static, an HTML build can save time and cost.

Bringing It All Together

Here’s a simple analogy:

  • Domain = your website’s address
  • Hosting = the land your website sits on
  • SSL = the security fence around it
  • Website = the building and interior your visitors walk through

We believe in helping our clients understand what they’re buying. We’ll never sell you something you don’t need – and we’ll always set things up so you stay in control.
